I love the MiG-25.  You could probably tell from this post.

Well, ICM has released a new kit of the MiG-25.  Here is analysis of the new kit on Youtube.

Movie review: Defiance (2008)

I got to see a sneak preview of the movie Defiance last night thanks to the generosity of MMCL club president-for-life Dr. Terry Hill.  It is based on a true story.  It is the story of a trio of jewish brothers in Belorussia in 1941. They are rural folk who before the war were engaged in sometimes shady business practices such as smuggling.  This gave them a knowledge of the deep forest near their home.  After their parents are killed by the Gremans, they hide out in the forest.  They end up taking in more and more jewish survivors or the SD death squads.  They hide in the forest and attempt to survive and preserve their culture.

The movie is not bad.  It isn’t that good either.  The actors do a good job with the script they have been given.  It is just hard to make a movie about hidng in the forest from Germans interesting for the two hour running time of the movie.  From a technical standpoint it is well done.  For the modeler and historian, there are no obvious technical gaffes.  All the guns and uniforms seem to be authentic and proper for the period.  They even did a nice job of making a T-62 look like a PZIII for the tank’s one appearance in the climactic final scene.

I liked the movie, but I didn’t love it.  I was glad I didn’t pay $10 to see it.  You might want to wait for it on DVD.

UT law professor Glen Reynolds, the man behind Instapundit, has an excellent article on how the law seems to be evolving different standards for “public servants” and regular citizens.  Here is the link.

End of the year lists

Every December and January you get “end of the year” lists.  Best of this…Worst of that, etc.  If it is good enough for everone else, it is good is enough for me.

Top 10 models I completed in 2008:

#10 thru #2 {blank}

#1 Revell 72nd scale Hawker Hunter

Now, I know what you are saying to yourself.  It is number one because it is the only model you finished in 2008.  While techincally true, that doesn’t keep it from being #1.  As I said in a previous post, it is a great kit.

Ten worst models I finished in 2008. (See list above)

Yep, same reason. Only one model finished.  Pretty sad.  Doesn’t make for much of a list.

Top ten models I’d like to complete in 2009.  Now I know what you are saying to yourself.  You finished one in 08, what makes you think you can finish 10 in 09?  I don’t really.  My eyes are always bigger than my stomach or my building skills.

10. Academy F-8E (The Battle of the Barristers build)

9. Trumpeter Su-15

8. Trumpeter P-40B/C

7. Revell Me-262

6. Trumpeter Hawker Sea Fury

5. DML MiG-17

4. Another Revell Hawker Hunter

3. Hasegawa B-24D

2. Revell He-177

1. Anything. Just finish a model!!!!

My next post will be a list of all the models languishing in half built condition in my model room, or as it is known throughout the land, “The List of Shame”.

Resin parts review (Quickboost Ju-88G-1 gun barrels)

Quickboost Ju-88G-1 gunpack gun barrels 72nd scale

Review by David M. Knights #17656

2.5 Euros  Approximately $5.50

One of the latest resin wonders from the Eastern European manufacturer Quickboost, is a set of replacement barrels for the gun pack of the Hasegawa Ju-88G-1.  As is usual for this manufacturer, the resin casting is flawless.  There are no pin holes or casting flaws.  The replacement barrels are thinner than the kit parts, as illustrated in the photograph.  The kit part is on the right in the photo.

The other advantage of the resin replacements is that the barrels have surface detail, while the kit parts are simply smooth styrene rods.

On the kit, one set of barrels barely pokes out of the gun pack, and thus replacing those barrels won’t make much difference.  However, the lower set of barrels in the gun pack protrude out a considerable length, thus replacing the kit parts with the Quickboost replacements will make a noticeable difference.  The cost of these replacement parts is fairly nominal and they Certainly will make a difference in the look of your finished

Movie review: The Holiday (2006)

Filed under: General — dknights @ 1:17 pm

Well, once again, the modelwife’s Netflix membership provided the movie background to a saturday afternoon.  This time, the movie was The Holiday with Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black and Cameron Diaz.  It is a story about two women with bad love lives who switch houses over the Christmas holidays to get away from their surroundings and their horrible love lives.  It is a chick flick.

It has the usual Hollywood moral sensibilities, including the scene where Diaz sleeps with Winslet’s drunken brother, just on a “what the heck, I’m on holiday” whim, and of course this leads to a long term relationship with the widowed father of two Law, rather than the STD or unwanted pregnancy that would have been the likely result in real life.

It is an entertaining movie.  Eli Wallach has a nice part as an aging Hollywood writer.  I am glad I didn’t pay to see it, but if you are looking for a nice “chick flick” you could do a lot worse than this one.

Photos on the net (Jeep)

Filed under: Modeling — dknights @ 4:00 am

This would make an interesting diorama.  The rail car looks european, maybe French or German.  There are numerous kits of these railcars available in 35th scale.  I’d love to see someone do this as a diorama.

I’ll try to get back to posting the occasional neat photo from the net if I can find the time.

33 Books

Filed under: General — dknights @ 4:52 pm

Time was, long ago, that I read 3 to 4 books a week.  However, with marriage and child rearing duties came a reduction in that pace.  2008 was my worst year for books.  I only “read” 33 books, including listening to unabridged books on tape/CD.

My favorite book of 2008 was clearly, Wellington’s Smallest Victory.  I reviewed it here.

The worst was Aristotle and an Aardvark go to Washington.  It is a book about logical falicies using current political events and statements of politicians to illustrate them.  It was biased crap.  Don’t waste your time.

Since the new year is the time for setting goals for the year, my goal is to read more than 33 books for 2009.  We will see.
