The Kelo comes home to roost

For those who haven’t heard, Pfizer is closing its headquarters in New London, CT.  This is the famous headquarters that caused the city of New London to take by eminent domain many perfectly fine houses and turn the property over to a private developer.  It spawned the awful and wrongly decided Kelo decision from the U.S. Supreme Court.  Turns out that Karma is indeed a b*tch.  More here.

Movie review: Downfall (2004)

Downfall is a 2004 German-made movie depicting the last days of Hitler in the bunker, based largely on the memiors of the 24 year old secretary to Hitler.  It is 2 1/2 hours long and is in german with english subtitles.  Yet, it held my attention easily.  This is an excellent movie.

The actor who protrayed Hitler managed to make the dictator seem human in spot, yet ruthless and/or crazy in other spots.  Watching the characters around Hitler, those who had followed him blindly for years, come to the realization that he is now out of touch with reality is amazing.

Eva Braun comes off as a ditz.  Magda Gobbels is chilling.  She is truly mad for Hitler, and watching her kill her own children is horrifying.  All of the performances in this movie were excellent.  I cannot recommend this one highly enough.  Well worth seeing.

Stealing content

Ohio attorney and modeler Jim Bates, the man to turn to for all things RCAF, has recently reviewed a new book on some Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft.  I shamelessly link to it here.  Sounds like a book well worth having.  I will also note that I am jealous of the fact that Barrister Bates has managed to get a lot more modeling content on his blog of late than I have.  I am going to try and remedy that situation in the future.  Stay tuned.

Apparently suing website operators to obtain the names of people who have posted comments on stories has now come to Kentucky.  I don’t know the attorney involved, but I’ll be interested to see what happens.  More here.

War reporting as it should be

If you haven’t been reading Michael Yon’s work you have simply missed the best of modern war reporting.  Mr. Yon, a former Green Beret, is simply the best war reporter in the world today.  Why this man is not employed by one of the big media newspapers or networks is beyond me.  Want to sell papers, or get more viewers?  This man’s work would do it. New York Times, CNN, are you listening?  Mr. Yon’s latest is here.

New York FDCPA case

This decision highlights what has happened a lot in the leegal collection industry in the last 10 years.  With computerization, information is now passed from creditor computers or collection agency computers directly to computers at collection law firms.  Demands are made without any human being ever actually examining the matter.  This is not a good trend and it will only get worse.

Movie review: Aerial Gunner (1943)

Aerial Gunner is a mid-war propaganda film about, you guessed it, aerial gunners in WWII.  It is on the disk of 20 “classic” WWII movies.  Actually, for what it is, this one isn’t bad.  It has a story, decent acting and for the modeler, some stock shots of wartime T-6 Texans (Harvards for you Brits and Canucks out there) and PV-1s.  Robert Mitchum actually appears uncredited in a small role.  I was unaware of this until I read in on IMDB.com.  While this movie won’t keep you spellbound, it will entertain.  Heck, it is better than either of the two Matrix sequels, though that may be damning it with faint praise. Well, I am a little closer to getting my $5.99 worth of entertainment from the DVD set.

that law professors aren’t some of the smartest people around.  This law school professor in Florida seems determined to prove that to be the case.  Why you would do this is beyond me.

UPDATE: Apparently the ridicule was too much.  The professor dropped his suit 24 hours later.

Ohio modeler and attorney Jim Bates reviewed the recent FAQ book on aircraft modeling.  Since I lent it to him, it is only right that I steal…I mean link to…the review.  Here it is.  I agree with Jim’s analysis.
