More Canadian craziness from the human rights racket

I’ve got to think that if this was going on in the U.S.  there would be riots and pitchforks.  Thank gosh that for now this kind of carziness is limited to our neighbor to the north.  I am glad to see that the appellate court (a real court) brought some sanity to the process.  I hope that Mark Steyn and the otehrs who have been subjected to these kangaroo tribunals keep the pressure on.

A great editorial on the subject here.

Magazine review: Scale Aircraft Modelling Vol.32 #8 (October 2010)

Still catching up on reviews.  From past reviews of SAM, I have been critical of the current direction of the magazine.  While not perfect, this issue is better than most.  It does help that it its theme is Soviet aircraft. (A special area of interest for me.)

The editorial bemoaning all the websites looking for free review samples is off-putting.  Like my mother says, “If you can’t say anything nice…..”  The feature article is on the Yak-15 and it is more than a one page, broad brush overview that features in both SAM and SAMI have been lately.

There is an excellent build article on the Trumpeter Tu-22M and the CMK Be-12.  I love both these aircraft.  The Be-12 review is particularly good, with photos that illustrate the points made by the author in the article, rather than just parts on a green mat that you usually see.  The layout of the magazine seems to have improved in this issue, and there are few typos. (Unfortunately, this trend did not continue in subsequent issues.)  However, nitpicks aside, this is a good issue.  Given the price of $13 as opposed to SAMI’s $9, I am not sure it makes up for the price difference, but this was a good issue.

The Super Bowl of Modeling

Modeler extrodinaire, Scott “Skippy” King, stopped by on Super Bowl Sunday.  We managed to get in some modeling in between watching the game and watching the modelchildren.

Here is Skip working on his Valom BT-1.

Carving plastic into the shape of a BT-1

I have no idea how Skippy takes dog kits like the Valom BT-1 and turns out masterpieces.  It also amazes me how well he makes any kit fit.  He uses very little filler, and the Valom kit cries out for filler.

Another shot of Skip in action.

Interesting photography news

This story is interesting.  While I support the right of photographers to photograph public areas, it seems this person, an illegeal alien, was photographing areas that either weren’t public or were areas where photography is banned.  Glad to see the police paying attention and glad to see the story note that picture taking at the airport is legal in most areas.

This person’s conviction will probably keep them from ever practicing law, thank god.  Read about the craziest law student ever, IMHO.

SAMI 16/11

If it wasn’t from Mike Grant’s fantastic O-1 build and his article on clear part techniques, this issue wouldn’t be worth buying.  The feature article is on the French MS.406, but the article is only a page, with a page of color sideviews and a set of 48th scale plans.  There is a companion build article on a 32nd scale MS.406..  It is one of the poorest feature articles that SAMI has had, with nothing but the briefest of overviews.  There are a couple of 72nd build review articles, but nothing that stands out.

Other than the Mike Grant article, the only real item of interest is a very nice build article of a conversion of the 32nd scale Revell  Beaufighter to a target tug version.  It is an excellent build.
