Sprue Cutters Union (Feb. 2015) Is the hobby dying?

The latest topic for the SCU is the classic, “Is the hobby dying?”

Frankly, this one bores me so much I almost decided to skip it.  However in the interest of completeness, I’ll answer.

“Who cares?”  Seriously, I am not all that worried about it.  I have plenty of kits and know plenty of modelers with whom I interact, so who cares what happens 50 years from now.

I think that this question come from the mortality we all feel.  We want to worry that the hobby is dying, because we desperately don’t want it to, because if it dies, then what we’ve been doing doesn’t matter.  Guess what?  It doesn’t matter anyway.  When you die, your build kits will be given away and eventually trashed and your stash and books sold off.  (For much less than you paid for them.)  That masterful build you did of the Fairey Fruitbat won’t matter to anyone and it is very unlikely that the model will even survive very long after your passing.

Would I like others to participate in the hobby and get the enjoyment out of it that I have?  Yes.  If enough do, then it will survive.  If not, it won’t.  Either way, I won’t be around to see it.

{For what it is worth, I think we are living in a golden age of modeling.  It is better now than at any time in the last 35 years.  I’ve seen no recent signs of that changing in the near term future.}

  1. Seems we agree on this topic, i think there is a lot of beefing up on this, as they say a storm in a tea cup.
