Where do bookstores go from here?

B & N is laying off hundreds of employees to try and stave off losses.  However, as this article points out, more than at a lot of other retail companies, the employees are an integral part of a bookstore’s success.  Is this the end of the mass market book chain store?  Will we be left with just independents and online?

  1. I believe it going to come down to one or two ‘big’ bookstores nationally and that will be it. Half-Price Books will remain as they have a bit of a different clientele than B&N and other big chain stores. Phones and tablets/e-readers are here and will not be going away. A whole generation is used to them. While there will always be a place for printed books in society it’s going to be a bit more selective in 30-40 years than now.
