More unmanned ships for the USN.

Revival of the VPB using B-1s

Stories like this give me some hope that the USN is thinking out of the box and won’t get caught equipping itself to fight the last war.

  1. I like the B-1 in the VP role.

How much would you like to bet that they end up putting crews on the “unmanned” ships? It would only make sense to have on-board maintenance and damage control capability and only people can do that. You would also want manned supervision of navigation for safety, and the ability to defend against being boarded. I can see a good case for small crew contingent even if all the functions are designed to be under off-board control.

  2. Frankly, I like decommissioned B-52s in the VP role even better. Given that they’ve already undergone anti-ship missile integration, and there are a ton sitting around and they have the range needed for the VP task.

I agree that undoubtedly they will put a small number of crewmen on an “unmanned” ship of any size. The only vessels I see being completely unmanned would be UUVs or very small ships.
