Frikkin’ laser beams

Interesting story.  I am doubtful that they can get these on fighter-sized aircraft by 2021, but there is no doubt in my mind that this type of thing is coming.


  1. A shipboard installation overcomes the size, weight, power, and cooling obstacles in one stroke. The fact that the useless gun system on the Zumwalt DDGs has not been replaced with lasers or railguns makes me wonder just how mature these technologies actually are.

  2. I agree. I think we are at least a couple of years off, though my understanding is the Army has actually field tested an anti-artillery version successfully. As far as the USN goes, it seems to me, that if perfected, this is the answer to the increasing threat of missiles to the modern warship. If the USN can field it successfully, well before anyone else, they will have a real window of advantage.
