The Chinese Communist Party is not our friend

Given the more normalized relations with China since Nixon’s visit in the early 70s, I think we’ve become numb to the danger the CCP poses. We defeated Soviet communism in the 90s and 30 years later we have a society where the young don’t know what communism is or the continuing horrors it represents.  These are the people Orwell was warning us about.  Story here.

  1. I’ve been considering the ramifications of prohibiting trade with China, mainly to stem the intellectual property theft and hamper their military build up. Doubt our allies would be on board and it may be too late already.

  2. In addition, like the 1941 oil embargo on Japan, a complete termination of trade might push China to make some rash decisions. When China opened up their economy,, we thought that as they grew a rich middle class, it would put pressure on their government to liberalize and democratize. It has to some extent, but I think we thought that it would happen faster; that they wouldn’t resist it in any meaningful fashion;.and that it wouldn’t have a negative effect on our society. We were naive, in large part because of our victory in the Cold War. We assumed that the CCP would fall like the Soviet communist party fell.
