OK, this is just crazy

An artillery round with a 65 km reach.  That is insane.  It is hard to wrap your mind around that kind of range for a mobile artillery piece.

To give some perspective, the famed “Paris railway gun” had a 120 km range.

  1. Sounds like a Rocket Assisted Projectile (RAP), but hard to say from the article. In the 1980s the Navy was working on a RAP round for the 16″/50. It was an 11″ sabot with laser guidance and a 65 nm range. If you’re designing a ship for ASuW and NGFS (what the Zumwalt was supposed to be) wouldn’t a 16″/50 with an autoloader be the weapon of choice?

  2. If it didn’t tip the ship over when fired. 🙂
