China is serious

Are we? Story here. (Post in memory of Mike Nofsinger)

  1. Short answer: no.
As long as we (a society and a polity) de-prioritize fundamentals of engineering and science (including public health, economics, and management), we will not be as serious as contemporary China. Becoming serious would require significant emotional labor—particularly courageous rejection of social and political dogma for which there is not a natural constituency.

  2. I agree. China’s fundamental weakness is its political system, but I am not sure that is enough to keep it from competing on the world stage.
