David Niven

Would that our actors today were so modest. I was unaware until watching this that David Niven got the Iron Cross in WWII.

  1. Funny, SWMBO and I watched this last Saturday. He, like most all combat vets, was very modest. If memory serves, he served in one of the numbered Commando regiments. On D-Day they were pinned down, morale was ebbing, and he said “this is all fine and well for you lot, you only have to go through it today. I’ll have to do it all over again with Errol Flynn after the war”. Laughs all ’round and back to business. 🙂

  2. Yep. The number of Hollywood stars that not only volunteered for combat but all but demanded it is amazing. Jimmy Stewart is an inspiration. I can’t think of a star today with that kind of honor. Amazing.
