OK, this is just crazy

An artillery round with a 65 km reach.  That is insane.  It is hard to wrap your mind around that kind of range for a mobile artillery piece.

To give some perspective, the famed “Paris railway gun” had a 120 km range.

War robots

Not really.  More like robot donkeys.  Story here.  While technology can’t solve every problem, a well-equipped (and well-trained) fighting force will beat even a numerically superior enemy.

What makes a “super soldier”?

The army has recognized for years that a small percentage of soldiers do a vast majority of the damage to the enemy in combat. These soldier’s effectiveness has an out-sized influence on the outcome of battle.  In battle their bravery borders on suicidal. They attack when any rational person would run and hide.  For years the army has done studies on how to identify, train and ultimately “make” more of its forces into these super soldiers.  So far they’ve been pretty unsuccessful.

As this article makes clear by example, many of these soldier (though not all) are misfits in peacetime.  They don’t fit well in the peacetime army.  They are regularly in trouble and don’t deal well with peacetime regulations.

More frikkin’ laser beams

Another story on the US military about to deploy laser weapons.  These, when combined with unmanned weapons platforms will be game changing.  When you take away the potential for heavy casualties, many military actions that were unthinkable, no longer are.

The Army wants artillery that can fire at targets up to 1000 miles away.  Story here.  I am skeptical that it can be done, but if it can be, it would change warfare in some fundamental ways.

An interesting story

...from the end of the cold war.  I recall that the Israelis did something similar stealing an entire SA-2 or SA-3 SAM radar unit from the Egyptians back in the 70s.

Another D-Day account

Read the whole thing.  Great Churchill story at the beginning, but the meat of the story is the interview after.  Read it and be in awe.

Tank upgrade

Looks like the US Army is getting its tanks upgraded a bit quicker.  I, for one, am happy to see that the U.S. armed forces are not ignoring conventional war-fighting.  Given our experiences with non-traditional combat (terrorism and insurgency) it would be easy to lose focus on conventional warfare.  I am glad we are not.

A good article on the medal. I had not realized that there were only 70 living recipients.
