Losses

As some of you may know, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting an undeclared war over the last few months.  Courtesy of Jeff “Inch High” Groves is an article listing the calculated losses for each side in equipment so far.  Given the small nature of the countries involved, these are some pretty significant losses.  Also, of note to me is how drones are changing the face of warfare, especially as it applies to the vulnerability of armored forces.

In the next year or so the USN plans to stand up the first unit operating the MQ-25A refueling drone. (VUQ-10)  Interesting article which confirms that the drones will have secondary use as a recon platform, and maybe more.

that the USN’s first autonomous aircraft are going to be refueling aircraft.  There is more here than meets the eye.

Syria heating up

I noted here the Russian and Syrian aircraft and helicopter losses in the Syrian civil war.  Well, in a timely addition to that information, it appears that someone shot down a Turkish drone/UAV which allegedly led Turkish F-16s to down two Syrian Su-24s as well as destroy a SAM site.

UPDATE: And apparently the Turkish Air Force has now downed a Syrian L-39.

The changing battlefield

The USAF is developing a UAV that is capable of being launched and recovered by a large airborne transport aircraft. The X-61A is planned to be configurable to any number of missions from recon to SAM suppression.  If the technology pans out, and there is no reason to think it won’t, the number of manned aircraft over the battlefields of tomorrow will shrink dramatically. Also, modern air defense will get a ton more complicated.

We are apparently using them.  Other countries are apparently catching them occasionally.  Glad to see the USN out there.  More please.

Story here.  If this laser works as advertised, it could really change things in a number of arenas, such as air and missile defense, anti-anti-tank defense etc.  Of course, we need to wait and see.

I love this story so much.  Can you imagine being one of the Iranian pilots?  You’d need to go home and change your flight suit.

I suspect we will be seeing many more stories like this in the future.  The average citizen has amazingly powerful technology at their fingertips now. It won’t always be used for good, but it will be capable of a lot of good.
