The passing of a hero

I meant to post this last year.  One of the American volunteers that help found the Israeli Air Force passed last year.  In addition, Mitchell Flint was also a US Navy flyer in WWII. He flew the F4U with the US, and the Avia S-199, Spitfire and Mustang in combat with the Israeli Air Force.

Amazingly this WWII pilot was able to get back home in this heavily damaged aircraft.  Anyone know of any other photos of the plane?

This photo came to me via Joe Turpen, I believe.  What I find interesting is the obvious repair and paint on the tail of the F4U in the foreground.

I’ve been considering buying SAM Publications new book on the F4U.  After reading Mr. Bates review, I will do so.  Nice review, Jim.

P.S.  Mr. Bates recently had the honor of arguing before the Ohio Supreme Ct.  See the photo below where super-lawyer and master modeller Jim Bates can be seen in the background.  Congratulations Jim.

Magazine review: IPMS/USA Journal Vol.23 #1

The latest issue of the Journal hit a while back.  I’ve been meaning to do a review, but I am afraid I put it off, partly because there are only so many ways to say “great magazine”.  However, this issue is particularly noteworthy in that the editor has remedied one of the few deficiencies.  In previous issues, when there has been an article with a scratchbuild or heavy modification, there haven’t been scale drawings to go along with the article.  This limited the ability of the modeler/reader to duplicate the work.

In this issue, there is an excellent heavy conversion of an F4U-1 back to the prototype.  The modeler/author did a great job.  In addition to the numerous photos of the project, there is an excellent set of drawings in the magazine.  Kudos to all involved.

As usual, the rest of the magazine is excellent.  If you are a modeler and are not a member of IPMS/USA you are missing out.  Join today.  Tell them David Knights sent you.

Matchbox Fairey Seafox

This was a build of the Matchbox Fairey Seafox by one of the fabulous Imola brothers.  I don’t know which one.

Typhoon

A Typhoon.

A beautiful P-51

 A P-51 from the 352nd, I think.

Here are two better photos of the Tamiya 72nd F4U-1D that I recently finished.  I want to thank MMCL member Randy Fuller for his photography tips.

Sorry I missed a day or two of posting.  I’ve been invovled in a Blitzbau (Lightening build) over on the Unofficial Airfix Modelers Forum.  You can see the build here.  I had a great time.

Here is the result.
