China

The Chinese government has been making great efforts to steal US technology.  As part of that they have been paying professors at american universities.  It is amazing the number of academics who have been willing to sell themselves and their talents.  I am glad to see the government cracking down on this.

Murder in Jamaica

Story here.  It is very unusual for tourists to be harmed in Jamaica, especially on the north side of the island where the locals depend on the tourist-related economy.  While Jamaica has been dealing with an uptick in violence (mostly gang-related) violence against tourists is nearly unheard of.  I’ll be interested to see what happened here.

US/India space cooperation

During his recent visit, the President praised the recent accomplishments of the Indian space agency and pledged greater cooperation between the countries.  This was the right move for several reasons. The Indians are rightly proud of their achievements in space, particularly in regard to lunar exploration.  Cooperation between the world’s democracies will lead to quicker advancements in space, which we need. Bump stocks

The administration’s change in the regulation regarding bump stocks came to the Supreme Court on a cert. petition.  That petition was denied.  However, the issue is far from over.  In fact, the matter is likely to come back before the Court very soon, and I am not sure that it will stand review.  As for me, I think that any change has to be handled by legislation, not regulation.

Good news?

After the series of USN procurement screw-ups, I am not confident about anything they do, but this seems like good news.  Lets hope they don’t boondoggle it.

Coronavirus

I haven’t said anything in regard to this, as many of the initial news stories seemed over-hyped. However, it appears it may be as deadly as the Spanish flu, and if so, that really could result in a massive death toll, especially in less well developed countries.  While anecdotal, this story sure seems worrying.

Creates more questions than it answers

Story here. Popular Mechanics is really doing a lot of work on the story surrounding the USN UFO sighting and what interest the DoD may have in the subject.  I am not sure this article answers a lot of questions, other than to suggest that the government handed out money to politically connected individuals for “work” that remains hidden. It is undeniable that some things are happening that we currently don’t have good explanations for.

I did not know this

Story here.  I didn’t know that the British dumped the ordinance there.  I would have thought they’d have taken it to a deeper part of the ocean.

Is there no crime in Florida?

Apparently so.  Is this the best use of law enforcement resources? Do you really need a license to paint walls in Florida? Wow.

More warfare by other means

I posted this yesterday.  Well, here is another case.  Unfortunately the universities involved have little incentive to crack down on this type of behavior.  The USA needs to restrict foreign students from some countries and incentivize the universities to monitor for this type of espionage.
