Murder in Jamaica

Story here.  It is very unusual for tourists to be harmed in Jamaica, especially on the north side of the island where the locals depend on the tourist-related economy.  While Jamaica has been dealing with an uptick in violence (mostly gang-related) violence against tourists is nearly unheard of.  I’ll be interested to see what happened here.

The government is making a substantial investment in the Jamaica Defense Forces facilities.  The biggest part of this is the completion of the new barracks near the Montego Bay airport.

Jamaican military moves

Jamaica’s small military force has recently been active in supporting the national police in fighting a mostly drug-related crime wave that threatens the peace and importantly the tourist industry that Jamaica depends on.  As part of this move, the Jamaica Defense Forces (JDF) are redeploying one of their two active infantry battalions to new barracks on the north side of the island next to the Sangster (Montego Bay, MBJ) airport.  Given the importance of this airport to the island’s tourist industry, this move seems prudent.  The state of emergency which saw the military supporting law enforcement operations ends at the end of January, but the 2nd Bn will remain permanently in barracks in Montego Bay.

Jamaica had the best performing stock market in the world last year.  Interesting to see the turn around in the Jamaican economy.

I’ve been to it and it is beautiful.  Do to liability and environmental issues, you’d never have an attraction like it in the US.  Like many things in Jamaica, it is apparent suffering from mismanagement. Unfortunately the news story is very short on details.

I previously posted on the “Jamaican Air Force” getting some new equipmentNow it looks like they’ve suffered a loss.  On the bright side, it doesn’t look like there were any fatalities.

Jamaica has just put into service a surveillance aircraft and two helicopters.  Now does anyone make a kit of a surveillance version of the King Air 350 in 72nd scale?

Military deployed to fight crime in Montego Bay

The Jamaican Defense Forces (the equivalent of the Jamaican Army) have been deployed to the resort town of Montego Bay and the surrounding St. James parish.  This is an effort to reduce crime, especially murders, that have spiked in the parish over the last year.  While crime has always been a problem in the southern part of the island, the tourist area in the northern half has typically been very safe.

This is a sad development sure to hurt the tourist trade that the island depends on.  Story here.

UPDATE: We are at Sunset Beach in Montego Bay.  See more on the resort here.

Well, still in Jamaica.  The modelwife is enjoying the vacation.

It is another beautiful day in paradise. Here is the view from our room at the resort.

The construction crane in the middle distance is working on a new resort being build next door.
