The end of manned fighters?

Elon Musk seems to think so.  I think that eventually he is correct, though I think for the reasons outlined in the article.

The USN is mounting and deploying anti-drone lasers on-board DDGs.  Personally I think that in the next ten years the big weapons developments will be in lasers, not hypersonics.

The new Ford class aircraft carrier has been designed with extra electrical capacity for laser weapons.

In addition the USN SSBNs are now fielding small yield nukes on some of their missiles.

Story here.  If this laser works as advertised, it could really change things in a number of arenas, such as air and missile defense, anti-anti-tank defense etc.  Of course, we need to wait and see.

More frikkin’ laser beams

Another story on the US military about to deploy laser weapons.  These, when combined with unmanned weapons platforms will be game changing.  When you take away the potential for heavy casualties, many military actions that were unthinkable, no longer are.

An article on how the Navy and Air Force are working hard toward increasingly powerful lasers.  The USN in particular needs a power level breakthrough in lasers.  I suspect that one is coming, and fairly soon.  The question will be can we keep the Chinese from stealing it once we develop the technology.

Interesting story.  I am doubtful that they can get these on fighter-sized aircraft by 2021, but there is no doubt in my mind that this type of thing is coming.

Hypersonic vehicles

The US is on track to test two hypersonic vehicles this year according to this report.  If you haven’t been paying attention, one of the big fears being pushed is that the Chinese are “way ahead” in developing a hypersonic vehicle or warhead.  Frankly, I can’t tell how much of this is “missile gap” hype (get it? Hype.  Sometimes I amuse myself) and how much is real.  It certainly does appear that hypersonic vehicles and lasers are going to be two important areas of weapons development in the near future.

Interesting thoughts on the coming use of aircraft mounted laser weapons.
