Mike Rowe does a great podcast called, “The Way I Heard It.”  If you haven’t listened, you should.

His recent podcast told the story of Adm. George Stephen Morrison who was the admiral in charge during the Gulf of Tonkin incident and who was also the father of Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors.  I never knew that.

Music review: Birdy and Christina Perri

Recently went to the new music venue in downtown Louisville, the Mercury Ballroom. There we got to see Birdy, a British 17 year old female solo vocalist and Christina Perri. I am not the target demographic for this act, but I have to say it was a very enjoyable evening.  Birdy is a fine young singer with an engaging voice and talent.  Christina Perri was fantastic.  She has an amazing voice.  It came thru live even better than in digital format.  It was crisp and clear with a great range.  She was very high energy throughout the show.  The venue had a good sounds system and acoustics and this went very well with Ms. Perri’s powerful voice.  I would definately go and see her again.

Arcade Fire

Drawing inspiration from Jim Bates musical musings, I though I would do a music related post.

A few weeks ago I was flipping channels in the evening, because nothing was on and I stopped on VH1 which was broacasting part of a concert.  I found this surprising since I didn’t think that VH1 and MTV actually broadcast music any more.  In any event, I stopped, listened and enjoyed what I saw and heard, which is pretty amazing, since I am generally of the opinion that music died in the late 1970s.

The group was called Arcade Fire.  The were very good and they reminded me of one of my favorite groups growing up, the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), in their use of non-standard instruments such as the accordian and violin.

The Chinese cities we were in during our recent trip had excellent public parks.  The parks were always full of people, young and old alike.  Here is a photo of some musicians who were playing in a park in Guangzhou.
