Good news, Polish addition

The Poles are buying 32 F-35s.  This will help them integrate further into NATO and provide them true 5th generation capabilities.  The Poles understand the need to be vigilant to their East.  I dam sure wish the rest of Europe did.

Germany gives up

Apparently Germany has given up the idea of even having a functioning military. Report here.  I know that many of these non-ready assets are actually functional in an emergency (being “down” because of a non-essential system failure) but Germany has been free-riding in NATO forever in order to prop up its welfare state and now seems to have given up altogether.  While I am on record that Russia is in many respects a paper tiger, that doesn’t mean that a country the size and importance of Germany shouldn’t have a functioning military.

Polish defense upgrades

It appears that Poland will upgrade its submarine force by purchasing second hand Swedish subs.  You don’t think much about Poland having a naval presence, but it has a significant Baltic coastline.

Why Turkey can’t have the F-35

And why this may lead to it leaving NATO.  Turkey is making a mistake.  Pretty sure NATO will actually be better off with Turkey gone.

Glad to see the Royal Navy upgrading and expanding their fleet.  One of the few NATO partners who is pulling their weight.

Turkey crosses a line

They have started receiving S-400 SAMs from Russia.  This means they won’t be getting F-35s.  Frankly, given its current government, I don’t see Turkey staying in NATO.  I am not sure they were ever really a good fit to begin with.

Turkey

Does Turkey want out of NATO?  It seems that way from this type of behavior.  Frankly, though it has a strategic location useful to the US for Mideast operations, I am not sure they are worth the trouble.  Not sure the Russians are thinking this one through either, as adding another majority Islamic nation to their orbit might not be wise given their internal troubles in the south of Russia.

This is bad news.   Ouch!   Hopefully it can be re-floated and repaired.
