So, I continue to play around with the Nikon.  I drug out an old P-40 and put it on the GHI base and took some beauty shots. Here is one.

I didn’t do any retouching.  I like the way this camera shoots.  The menu isn’t quite as easy as the Olympus, but that might just be what I am familiar with.

With shooting models, extreme close ups are an important feature.  I use a +4 magnification filter to take this shot.  I didn’t use any software zoom.  This is straight from the camera.

A nice close-up.  Note the dust on the nose that the camera picked up. (I should have dusted the model before I took the photos, but this was just about testing the camera.)

Here I took the previous shot and used Photoshop elements to zoom in.  The detail stays sharp.  Note how pebbly the paint looks at this magnification.

I think this camera will more than work for my needs.

Date: 1/27/2013

Time: 10:26 a..m.- 11:17 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.-10:04 p.m.

Session time: 1 hour 55 minutes

Total time for the Year: 12 hours 1 minute.

Two separate sessions on this day.  Did not make a lot of substantive progress.  Paint on the SSBN, but it needs another coat due to my overly thinned paint.  Began work on a long-term project on the new Sword Ki-44.  The P-40 and the MiG-21 are in a long term holding pattern.

The 2013 modeling project (week2)

The second week of the project is in the books.  I modeled on four occasions totalling 5.4 hours.

This is an increase over the first week.  I have no illusions that I can keep this pace up.  At this pace, I’d finished the year with 221 hours of actual building.  There is simply no way that is going to happen.

The P-40 is close to being done.  The SSBN is a simple kit that is taking a bit longer than it should since I am trying to concentrate on making it a construction and painting exercise.  The MiG-21 is moving, but not as fast as I’d like.

My goal this week is to post more photos with these entries, as I think it will make them a little more interesting.

Got back to the bench and modeled while Skyping with Mr. Bates.  Spent the time adding data stencil decals to the Pearl Harbor P-40.  Yuck!  I hate doing data stencil decals.  They are small and a pain in the ass.

I did some building and painting on the Airfix P-40B during the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I’m only now getting a chance to post the photos of progress.

These two photos are of the P-40 with some rough preshading.

Pearl Harbor P-40 progress

Over the last 45 days I’ve been working on the Airfix P-40B that I intend to put in Pearl Harbor markings.  Sadly the holidays kept me from finishing it by the Dec 7th deadline for the group build over on UAMF.  In any event, I’ll post updates here.

Here is the P-40 after its initial coat of Medium gray that will constitute the underside color.

Underside medium gray.

Here is the top of the aircraft in the same gary which in this case acts as the primer.

Airfix P-40B

I was able to get the new Airfix P-40B and have started building it for a group build over on UAMF.  So far, I like the kit a lot.  It ain’t Tamiya, but it ain’t Tamiya priced either.  I think it is on par with the Trumpeter kit, but then again, the Trumpeter kit is 3 times the price.  So far, the only think I don’t like is the way the tail wheel and tail wheel well are represented.  Mr. Bates maintains that the Airfix was trying to represent the canvas boot that whet over the wheel well, and I think he is right, but I still don’t think it is very good.  Trumpeter did not try and represent the canvas cover as being in place.

Here are some photos so far.
