Look at this photo of and SBD on USS Santee CVE-29.  My guess on the date is late 42 or early 43.  Look at the weathering.  Look at the grime around the wing roots and notice even at this distance many panel lines are visible. Color period pictures like this are a real help to the modeler who wants to weather their model.

Starfighter sheet 72-138

Starfighter sheet 72-138

Starfighter has just released a small 72nd scale decal sheet with 3 early SBD-1/2 in the classic pre-war “Yellow Wings” markings.  There are two Marine aircraft and one Navy bird. Of course, at the present time, there is no 72nd kit of the SBD-1/2.  However, Starfighter is soon to release a resin conversion for the Hasegawa kit of the SBD-3/4/5 to backdate it to the 1/2 version. The Hasegawa kit has been out of production for some time, however, it is just being re-released.  The timing of these decals and the upcoming resin conversion couldn’t be better.

Starfighter’s decals are of the finest quality.  The registration is spot on and the decals appear very opaque.  Finally, you can’t argue with the $6 price tag.  A definite must-have for 72nd “Yellow Wings” fans.

Magazine review: IPMS/USA Journal Vol.24 #3

I’ve previously voiced my opinion that the Journal is the best value for the money modeling magazine out there.  The latest issue doesn’t disappoint.

The issue is especially nice for 72nd modelers as it features two 72nd aircraft build articles.  Editor Chris Bucholtz has a feature article on building the venerable Hasegawa SBD-3 for a Midway display at the USS Hornet.  It is a very good article, marred only by a lack of “in progress” shots.  Equally nice is an article on converting the Heller T-28S back to a US Navy T-28C.

I’ve said this with nearly every Journal review, but if you aren’t a member of IPMS/USA and thus getting the Journal, you are missing out on a great modeling read six times a year.  Go join now!

Next time someone tells you that you’ve overweathered your model, show them this photo.  If you haven’t been following it, Google has recently put the Life photo archives online.  This is a treasure trove for historians and modelers.  Go to Google and take a look.
