Enola Holmes

I’ve previously written on the fact that I am a fan of the Sherlock Holmes character.  Netflix has a new movie based on a character set in the Sherlock Holmes universe, Enola Holmes.  While clearly not canon, it looks interesting. When the Jude Law-Robert Downey, Jr. movie trailer first appeared, I was a bit worried as it looked to be a buddy cop movie rather than something truer to the spirit of the canon.  I was pleasantly surprised in that case.  I hope I will be here as well.

“It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly, one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”- Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes

I love Sherlock Holmes.  One of the great characters out of fiction. For me, Basil Rathbone will always be my idea of Sherlock Holmes.  He made the character his own and seemed to understand the nuances of Arthur Conan Doyle’s writings.  (Although, Hugh Laurie has done a great job with the character on House.  If you didn’t realize House is a remake of Sherlock Holmes, you haven’t been paying attention.)

In any event, it appears that there will be a new Sherlock Holmes movie around Christmastime.  It stars Robert Downey, Jr and Jude Law.  I like both actors, but from watching the trailer, it worries me.  It looks like much more of an action flick/buddy movie than something true to the canon.  However,  I could be wrong.  The movie Young Sherlock Holmes took great liberties with the history of the main characters laid down in Doyle’s writings, yet still managed to stay true to the spirit of the works.  I hope that is true of this new movie as well.
