2018 Total time: 31.83 hrs.

The April collapse.

As I feared, the April collapse has occurred.  It was worse than in years past.  This happens around this time every year.  I’ve had a good modeling run in January, it slows in February and March and then just falls off the table.  The accident on the way to Dayton made it worse this year, as did starting a new job, but it happened nonetheless.  I spent this night working on the seams of the T-33.  I am on a deadline to finish this for Jim Bates and crunch time is coming.  I have to finish this.

I forgot to post this. One hour of general modeling.  Just working on the Okha and the T-33.

Time 3:26 p.m. to 5:35 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (3.15 hrs.)

2018 Total time: 29.78 hrs.

Marathon Saturday modeling session with guest modeler Scott “Skippy” King.  Since the Platz T-33 is on a deadline to get finished, I devoted all my time to it.  Got the seams filled and smoothed.  Refilled them and they are ready for final sanding.  This one should be ready for paint before too long.

Unfortunately, this is it for March.  Due to circumstances, I won’t be able to model for the first part of April.  I am now averaging less than 120 hours for the year. Given other changes in my life, I don’t see this getting better later in the year.

Time 10:15 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. (.58 hrs.) and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (1.0 hrs.)

2018 Total time: 21.22 hrs.

With this entry, February is in the books.  As I predicted, I couldn’t keep up the January pace. I got in 12.99 hours in January and this dropped in February to 8.23 hours. I am on pace for 127.32 modeling hours for the year.  At an average of 40 hours a model, this will have me completing only 3 models in 2018, well below my goal of 5.  Depressing.

This session was spent mostly drilling holes in the hull of the T-34/85 for the grab handles, which I am going to make out of fine wire as the plastic ones in the kit are too chunky.  I also got the major components of the T-33 together and used plastic strip to fill the gaps created by the odd engineering choices made by Platz.

Here is where the models stand at the end of February.

Time 1:40 p.m. to 2:10 p.m. (.5 hrs.), 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 (.5 hrs), 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (1.0 hrs)

2018 Total time: 18.39 hrs.

Finally got back to the bench after 10 days away.  Sadly, my prediction that February would not be as modeling intensive as January is coming true.  Worked on both the T-33 and the T-34/85.  Both are progressing well.  I suspect that as I predicted, the T-33 will require about 40 hours total to finish.  The T-34/85 won’t take that long.  Pictures with the next update.

Another T-33

I am currently building a Platz T-33.  Tan Model has announced a T-33 kit.  I am wondering if it is a rebox or a new kit.

Time 4:00 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. (.83 hrs.)

2018 Total time: 16.39 hrs.

Got some time in at the bench.  As I suspected, I haven’t been able to keep up the pace set in January.  I did manage to close up the Platz T-33 fuselage.  I also got some more work done on the T-34/85.  (In the photo below, the chassis is just sitting on the hull.) The tank is coming along nicely.  I don’t think it will take me 40 hours to finish the T-34/85, but I am pretty sure that it will take that many hours to finish the T-33, especially with the finish II’ve chosen.

Moving along

2018 Modeling #10 & #11

Time 6:50 p.m. to 7:40 a.m. (.84 hrs.) & 9:30 p.m. to 11:05 p.m. (1.58 hrs.)

2018 Total time: 11.82 hrs.

Photos.  Finally we have some photos.  Even thought the Platz T-33 I am building is for a display case, I am taking some time detailing the cockpit.  The reason I am doing it is I wanted to take the opportunity to try out some new techniques, and this is perfect, since I don’t care how the cockpit turns out on this one.  I used Mr. Color RLM 66 to paint the cockpit.  This is the first time I’ve used this paint since it isn’t readily available here.  I must admit it sprayed well, and it was very durable.  I used a dot filter over the cockpit color to break up the monotone.  It worked out quite nice, though the bright yellow I used as one of the colors was a bit stronger than I would have thought.  I then used Roy Sutherland’s Future wash technique on the cockpit.  I didn’t add enough pigment in retrospect, but I think the way the technique works and will use it in the future. (pun intended).  Here is a crappy cell phone photo of the finished product.

I also began work on a Trumpeter T-34/85.  I want to do a Bay of Pigs Cuban T-34/85 to go with the SS-4 I completed earlier.  I have just started the kit.

Next post will contain some depressing analysis of my chances of completing 5 kits this year.

2018 Modeling #8 & #9

Time 12:00 a.m. to 12:40 a.m. (.67 hrs.) & 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (2.0 hrs.)

2018 Total time: 9.4 hrs.

I had a 9 day gap since my last modeling session.  Not good. I will try not to let that happen again, since I’ve become convinced that modeling isn’t like riding a bike.  If you don’t model regularly, you do lose skills and lose your place on your current project.

One benefit of keeping track of my modeling time like this is I’ll be able to tell how many hours it takes for me to complete a project.  My goal is always to finish 5 kits a year, but that may be unrealistic given the number of hours I model in a year and the number of hours that it takes for me to complete a project.  We will see.

I know I keep promising photos, but really there isn’t much to photograph.  I did a lot of work on the cockpit of the T-33.  I used a dot filter technique to break up the monotone color of the interior.  I followed it up with Roy Sutherland’s Future wash technique.  This was my first time using this technique and I am generally pleased with it.  Next time I’ll use more pigment in the wash.

I swear there will be photos next time, and I hope it won’t be another week and a half.

2018 Total time: 6.73 hrs.

OK, I lied.  I promised a photo to go with the next post.  However, most of the work I did on the T-33 was drybrushing the cockpit and attaching one of the wing tanks.  Nothing exciting.  Nothing that would merit a photo.  That said, I promise a photo with the next post.  I also promise something longer and more interesting.
