Not sure what to think

This is interesting, but seems more suited to Spec. Ops.  I am not sure a 72 man USMC unit is enough weight to accomplish a militarily worthwhile objective.  I wonder what the thinking is here.

Academy, this time.  I’ll be interested to see how the various kits compare.  More later.

A little bit of good news

It seems like nothing but bad news comes out of Asia these days with tensions ratcheting ever higher.  Well, this seems to be a positive development.  The JMSDF has asked the US Marines to deploy the F-35B on two large Japanese Helicopter carriers.  The Japanese are buying their own F-35Bs and this appears to be some advance work to make sure that the JMSDF ships are ready for the new equipment.

A good article on the medal. I had not realized that there were only 70 living recipients.

Man, we are in trouble if discipline is fading in the Marine units.

Looks like they are getting even cheaper.

Also, they are getting more weapons carriage capability.

Things are coming up roses all over for the F-35.

The return of the light carrier

Looks like the Marines while exercising in the Philippines have loaded up the USS Wasp (LHD-1)with an unusually large contingent of F-35Bs.  This isn’t really surprising.  I suspect that the USN will test out multiple configurations on the LHA/LHD and even LPDs.  Where a US presence is required with an air presence, but not enough to warrant a CVN, these “light carriers” with F-35Bs will be a real force multiplier.  When the Loyal Wingman drones come online down the road, there will be even more of a force multiplier effect.

Fascinating stuff here.  You really come away with the sense that air-to-air combat has changed dramatically in the last 15 years.

Wooden wonder

No, not the DH.98 Mosquito.  Rather a drone being developed for resupply by the Marines.  Great concept. Good cost effectiveness. Out of the box thinking.
