Asymmetric warfare

It has been said that the for all the technological advantages of the advanced Western powers, they are ill equipped to fight modern terrorism that uses non-traditional methods and uses the structure of the open, Western welfare state societies against themselves.  Here and here are articles on an interesting exploration of the weaknesses of the Western welfare state.  The United Kingdom has had a similar issue for years.  To win the war against the barbarians, Western societies must find a way to deal with these asymmetric threats.  War isn’t just about guns and tanks and airplanes anymore.

A view of our future

I recently highlighted a story from the UK about a recent arrival to the UK who was living quite well off the generous benefit system.  Here is another such story.

While on the one hand I find these people’s behavior deplorable, on the other hand, they are only making rational decisions based on the system that has been set up.  IN any event, such a system cannot last and when it crashes, these folks are going to be the ones most hurt by the crash and the ones most upset that their free stuff is gone.  That isn’t a receipe for orderly social change.
